Career Opportunities
At all times Carvello Law seeks to provide value to our clients through informed and practical advice, polished work that evidences excellence, and effective and creative problem-solving. Within a collegial work environment of 3-4 lawyers and support staff, you will enjoy a large degree of responsibility and independence working on complex and interesting files, while having the opportunity for training, growth and collaboration with Lui Carvello, who is a registered professional planner, a lawyer specializing in this area for the last 20 years, former President and executive member of the Canadian Bar Association's Municipal Law Section (BC Branch), and an elected representative on the PIBC Board of Directors since 2013.
Our firm is located in a heritage building in the heart of downtown Victoria, British Columbia. In order to meet the growing needs of our loyal clients, we are looking to expand our office space and add to our team:
Keen lawyer(s) (5+ years of call) who have experience with local government, real estate/development and/or environmental law
We are open to hiring one or more experienced local government and/or development lawyer(s) who can work both in a team and on their own to help fill the gap between the existing 20-year call principal and the 3-year call associate. Full-time is preferred but flexible work arrangements available for preferred candidates. Competitive remuneration, including fair bonuses. Bringing clients is not necessary (we have plenty of good work) but would be appropriately compensated.
A planning professional who wishes to jump-start their career and is willing to assist with office administration.
The position for a planning professional/student is full-time and ideally suited to someone that is interested in:
the legal side of planning work (OCPs, zoning and other bylaws; development agreements, covenants, public hearing notices, procedure, procedure, procedure …),
learning from the ground up, including administrative work and familiarizing yourself with all we do by printing and filing emails and documents, and being the person that does the first draft of certain documents (to start out with),
continuing or becoming a member in PIBC and CIP,
not having to worry about creating work or bringing in clients, but keenly committed to servicing our clients with excellence,
evidencing your eagerness to learn and your patience in being trained in what we do, with the goal of developing you professionally to the point where you are presented to clients as a planning consultant who can draft bylaws and other planning documents under Lui's supervision,
working in a highly confidential manner, not often talking about the specifics of our work and our clients (and never about the legal advice behind that work, except for within the office and with that particular client),
working competently in a Mac–based environment, and
being initially paid more than an administrative assistant but less than a municipal/professional planner, with increases coming with increased capacity and evolution to do more of the above.
